Why I Froze My Eggs




Newsweek magazine recently ran a story on egg freezing. The story chronicled the experience of the author, Rachel Lehmann-Haupt, who recently underwent a cycle of egg freezing in New York. She discussed various challenges faced by modern women, stating “ as education, advanced degrees and higher salaries become priorities, we are trading in our years of procreative power to gain economic power” and “as a result, technology and feminism are leading us to make choices that we couldn’t a generation ago.”

The article comments on a variety of important aspects of egg freezing including improvements in egg freezing technology, safety issues, and the fact that freezing eggs does not guarantee a baby.

She also pointed out the profit motivation of some doctors and companies to offer egg freezing. It should be noted that less than 5% of all fertility specialists offering egg freezing can claim a scientific publication or birth of even one baby from a frozen egg.
